Plus the possibility of melting your card, cpu, mobo or all ! Check your temperatures if you're going to try 200%, but you'll find not much difference atall. Most apps work well at 1.5. Hardly any difference in movies. If there is a difference in movie quality, there's something wrong elsewhere, it's not been improved by the sampling.

Super sampling and super enhance make a big difference within Simple VR on the Samsung display, it makes the picture nice and sharp. Playing H.265 files of any size doesn't put much strain on my laptop, enabling the enhanced modes doesn't put the system under any additional strain. I'm not talking about global supersampling levels within oculus or steam vr and i'm not 100% sure how virtual desktop works (been a while since i sold my Rift). Taken from a review of SimpleVR: Super Sampling Resolutions provides higher quality and cleaner rendered images, and can be fine tuned in real time. Super Enhanced Mode, when enabled, uses an algorithm which enhances the details and contrast of the image, while retaining the quality. This will improve the sharpness and “realness” of images immensely.

So what device would you guys recommend as being best to view 5k h265 files in. I have an Oculus Rift and it obviously has limitations on resolution. To be fair it still gives decent images, SuperSampling in Virtual Desktop makes a subtle difference to the point where you cannot really tell if it is switch on or not.

Was considering an Oculus Go for sharper images but it's LCD so what you gain in sharpness you lose in accurate colour and can it play 5k ? It certainly is cheap and would keep the Rift for gaming and use the Go for media.

Was also thinking of the Quest which is clealy going to be higher spec. Or Pimax or Samsung but these are obviously more expensive. Leecio, how does the Samsung compare to the rift ? Have you been able to try both with 5k?

Any headset claiming that images are improved by supersampling etc are using an old placebo effect using anisitropic and edge smoothing terchniques. It's a gimmick. It might make a small difference to the overall image, but the sharpness can be done within any software video editing suite. It won't affect the Vive or Oculus as much as their smaller counterparts.
You won't get better than the Oculus and Vive pro at the moment, but the Go has slightly better resolution. Wouldn't personally waste money on it just for media though, the GO will NOT be getting the games you can play on the Rift, just a handful of the less demanding titles. Keep your eyes on Rift news later this year. You could splash out on an 8K headset if you have money to burn, but it's a long way off before mainstream goes to that resolution !
You can edit the 5ks to make them smaller in size and play more smoothly, but really, why bother when the 4K works and looks 95% as good ? No idea why 5K was ever thought up anyway, as it's ony usually used to showcase hardware rather an industry benchmark. The next feasible is 6K. Not going into it, if you want geek/tech talk, look it up

The Go is no good for this type of media as it's LCD, you can't get immersion with washed out colours. The quest (April 30th) appears to have the same panels as the VivePro/Samsung. The Samsung amoled panels are a nice upgrade from the Rift, the colours are richer and the resolution increase although not amazing, is obvious. The Quest could well be the best porn headset so far

I prefer not to be tethered to my computer, so I have both the Go and and Gear VR with a Galaxy S8 (exynos version which is important).

Go Pros:
More Comfortable
Better optics - less distortion when you look around
Standalone unit - no fucking around with a phone and no marks on screen issues

Go Cons:
Will only play 4Kish files - think its up to 2048p with H.265
Battery life is bad
No SD card slot

S8 Pros:
Will basically play any file you throw at it - just download the highest resolution from any VR porn site and it will play for now at least
Has SD card slot up to 256GB - but I would recommend streaming anyway
OLED screen gives nicer colours than the go.

S8 Cons
Not very comfortable, at least to me
Using a phone is a bit of a pain with charging, keeping screen clean etc
Overheats quite often
Screen Door Effect is worse than the Go

Apologies folks ! I was referring to the Quest for the best wireless headset when mentioning the games etc. It won't support Rift games, only a handful, but it is the best overall for the time being if you want untethered. As i said before though, not worth the money if you plan just using for media. Rift are planning a Rift2 wireless system.

Yes , some news on that today in fact - Google 'Rift S'. No need for sensors but will be tethered to PC,which is fine by me as true stand alone simply does not have the processing power and will not have for some time yet. Potential for a wireless to PC connection though. Hopefully will be out this year.

For me, I just want better optics more than anything so we can watch video that does not look like an early 80's video tape.

Galaxy S8 Exynos and onwards can already do up to 6K, and the upcoming Snapdragon 855 should be able to as well and that will be in many different phones. If someone put one of those chips in a standalone device (with good optics, screen etc) then that would be the perfect VR device for porn at least. Would be pricey though, and I'm sure the numbers don't work which is why won't be done.

I have a Galaxy s9 - is it worth investing in a Samsung Gear VR - will that give better optics that the Rift do you know ?
